BelBul is the official label for Belgian sparkling wines crafted using the traditional method. This label guarantees superior quality and local expertise — a standard of excellence found in every bubble.

A QUALITY SEAL FOR BELGIAN BUBBLES

BelBul is a joint initiative of vzw Belgische Wijnbouwers – Vlaanderen and asbl Association des Vignerons Belges – Wallonie.

This label is based on strict criteria regarding origin, production method, and quality — ensuring that consumers are choosing an exceptional Belgian sparkling wine. A BelBul bottle is easily recognized by its certified quality label displayed on the packaging.

STRICT CRITERIA

Winemakers seeking the BelBul label must meet strict standards that guarantee the quality and authenticity of their Belgian sparkling wines:

  • The sparkling wines must be produced using the traditional method.
  • They must hold a recognized designation such as BOB (Beschermde Oorsprongsbenaming) or AOP (Appellation d’Origine Protégée).
  • The wines must be 100% Belgian — meaning that both grape cultivation and winemaking must take place in Belgium.
The purchase of foreign grapes is not permitted.
  • The winery must be a Belgian family-owned business.

Thanks to these rigorous standards, BelBul offers a trusted mark of quality that meets the highest benchmarks.

BELGIAN SPARKLING WINE ON THE RISE

The Belgian wine sector is experiencing remarkable growth. In 2021, more than 2.1 million litres of wine were produced. A year later, that volume surpassed 3 million litres — nearly half of which was sparkling wine.

It’s not just production that’s on the rise: the number of Belgian winemakers continues to grow as well. In 2024, 321 winemakers were registered, up from 290 in 2023 and 259 in 2022. This includes both professional producers and passionate hobbyists.

Total vineyard area has expanded to 958 hectares, with a clear focus on grape varieties suited for sparkling wine. Today, more than 100 Belgian wineries produce their own sparkling wine.

This evolution highlights the sector’s maturity — and the growing need for a trusted quality label like BelBul.
